Cremations Update

The large urn was found to contain a smaller, collared urn within (scale = 10cm).

Some of the washed and dried cremated remains (scale = 15cm).

In March we told you about a number of urned and un-urned cremations that we’d discovered while digging on one of our sites. While micro-excavating one of the urns, our osteologist found that the cremated remains had actually been contained within an additional smaller inverted vessel placed inside the large urn.

Work can now begin on analysing the remains. This will hopefully tell us a great deal about how many people had been interred within the smaller vessel, how old they were when they died and whether they were male or female. Don’t forget to check our Twitter feed for updates!
